Proofreading and Copyediting

In the print publishing world, proofreading is a final stage of typographic production to help assure quality control. Once the authors and editors have completed their work on a manuscript, it’s usually handed over to professional proofreaders to help ensure spelling, grammar, and punctuation are correct and consistent.

Typically, proofreaders will apply shorthand marks and symbols by pen to a printed final draft. Those unique copyediting symbols are understood by other proofreaders, editors, and page layout specialists so the final version of the printed book or article can be refined to its most professional state.

Certainly, proofreading can and often is applied directly to electronic documents like Word files and PDFs as well. Though copyediting symbols may have less application here, most professional proofreaders are still quite familiar with them.

Some might argue that proofreading is less important for works destined for webpages since they can be updated much more easily. But posting content or copy with errors or bad punctuation certainly won’t reflect well on the publisher’s credibility.

As a matter of course Spark Creative recommends and uses internal proofreading specialists who will review all brochures, content posts, video scripts, and more before they are released for publication or distribution.
